Research about China must study her control approach, because in human history, you cannot find another one like Chinese culture, which has been entirely controlling the citizen抯 life not only in political and conscious level, but also the substantial and spatial realm coving from macro-scale urban planning, through the traditional architectural construction regulation, to every sophisticated detail of daily life since thousands of years ago. Ironically another paradox was generated through last hundred years: at one hand the fully control from the central government has never ever changed along different dynasties; at the other hand, the control appeared both rigorous and loose nature through the vibration and war last century, the nature disaster and civil tragedy thereafter, and the economic reform most recently. All of these build up the two sides of China today. Inform China holds a gesture against the formal China out of the official campaign. In the context of constitutional roughness and partial out-of-control, the Informal Creators rebuild our environment spontaneously through a bottom-up approach. Different from the formal design, the construction of the Informal Creators is random, un-linear and self-organized. Consequently, it is more flexible and adaptive to the environment change. Today design emerges as the service consumed more and more by current Chinese elites capable to pay the fee and those from privileged classes. In this context, Informal, as an invisible side of China, is fading out envisaging the highly control and systematic procedure of Chinese society, and the huge amount of preserved sites and ready-to-use living pattern.
<Informal China> is going to take part in Contemporary China exhibition in Rotterdam, in which the Formal China will be presented, including her self-examination and achievement in formal design realm, as well as the dream she tends to shape - a powerful China synchronized to the global pulse. However, Urban China is keen to unfold another vivid image from different angel - those living at the bottom of the pyramid and their informal creation, which inevitably represent another considerable voice from China.
